UK Passport Rules 2026 — The Quick Answer

To enter Europe's Schengen area in 2026, your UK passport must be issued less than 10 years before you arrive and valid for at least 3 months after you leave (GOV.UK advises 6 months on arrival). You can stay 90 days in any 180. The Entry/Exit System (EES) is fully live, so expect a photo and fingerprints on your first entry and longer queues at peak times. ETIAS is not operating and has no launch date, so do not pay any website for it. This guide covers passport checks, EES, ETIAS, fees and a three-month travel calendar to January 2027. EES Explained: What Happens at the Border

EES began on 12 October 2025 and became fully operational on 10 April 2026 across 29 European countries. It replaces passport stamps with a digital record and applies to UK travellers on short stays. Ireland and Cyprus are not part of it.

First entry

Photo + fingerprints

You register at a kiosk or booth. Travellers aged 12 and over give fingerprints; under-12s give a photo only.

Later trips

Usually faster

Returning travellers typically need a facial check only, but an existing record does not remove border checks.

Cost

Free

EES registration carries no fee. Never pay a third party to "pre-register".

Refusing biometrics

Risk of refused entry

A traveller who will not provide required biometrics can be denied entry.

Wrong record?

You can challenge it

If entries or exits look wrong, ask for correction and keep evidence such as boarding passes.

UK ports

Dover, Folkestone, St Pancras

French checks happen on UK soil. Car biometrics have been repeatedly delayed, so check your operator the week you travel.

Beating EES Queues This Half-Term and Christmas

Industry bodies have reported waits above two hours, and up to five in extreme cases. Reports differ on whether countries can still pause checks, so never plan on a waiver. Many airlines advise arriving three hours before flights home.

Leave long connections

Allow 3+ hours when connecting after a Schengen arrival.

Avoid peak Saturdays

Midweek arrivals and mid-morning flights are usually calmer.

Check insurance

A missed flight from border queues is often not covered by the airline.

Brief children

Practise standing still for the photo; under-12s skip fingerprints.

ETIAS: No Launch Date and a Scam Warning

ETIAS is the EU's planned online travel authorisation, expected to cost 20 euros. The late-2026 target was removed from the official site in July 2026. As of 19 October 2026 no new date had been announced, and the EU says it will give several months' notice.

Scam alert. ABTA says more than 150 websites already sell ETIAS even though no applications are open. If a site asks for payment today, it is not official.

UK Passport Fees and Timings (From 8 April 2026)

Service Adult Child
Online (UK) £102 £66.50
Paper (UK) £115.50 £80
1-week Fast Track £192 £156.50
1-day Premium £239.50 n/a

Standard applications usually take up to 3 weeks. Child passports last 5 years, adult passports 10.

Myths and Spicy Questions Travellers Keep Asking

"My passport has 9 months left, so I'm fine"

Not if it was issued over 10 years before you enter. Check the issue date.

"I need ETIAS for Christmas"

No. It is not operating and has no date.

"I can refuse fingerprints"

You can, but you may be refused entry.

"Queues mean checks get skipped"

Do not count on it. Rules on pausing checks have changed.

"An Irish passport is a loophole"

Only if you genuinely hold one and use it for the whole journey.

"A refused boarding is the airline's problem"

Airlines can refuse invalid passports without refunding you.
