How to Perform Umrah — Step by Step
Umrah is a non-mandatory Islamic pilgrimage to Makkah that can be performed at any time of year, unlike Hajj which is bound to specific dates. It consists of four essential steps. Understanding each step before you travel will help you perform Umrah with confidence and devotion.
Enter Ihram at the Miqat
Before crossing the Miqat (the designated boundary points around Makkah), make your intention (niyyah) for Umrah, put on the ihram garments, and recite the Talbiyah: "Labbayk Allahumma Labbayk..."
Perform Tawaf of the Kaaba
Circumambulate the Kaaba seven times in an anti-clockwise direction. Begin and end at the Black Stone (Hajar al-Aswad). Make du'a and dhikr throughout each circuit.
Pray Two Rak'ahs at Maqam Ibrahim
After completing Tawaf, pray two rak'ahs behind or near Maqam Ibrahim if possible (the station of Ibrahim). Then drink Zamzam water.
Perform Sa'i Between Safa and Marwa
Walk seven times between the hills of Safa and Marwa — beginning at Safa and ending at Marwa — commemorating Hajar's search for water for her son Ismail.
Halq or Taqsir — Exit Ihram
Men shave the head completely (halq) or shorten the hair (taqsir). Women cut approximately a fingertip's length of hair. This completes Umrah and you exit the state of ihram.
Visit Madinah (Highly Recommended)
While not a formal part of Umrah, visiting Madinah to pray at Masjid an-Nabawi and send salawat upon the Prophet ﷺ is a deeply revered act undertaken by the vast majority of UK pilgrims.
Spiritual note: The journey of Umrah is deeply personal. Take time to make sincere du'a at each stage. The accepted du'a of Umrah — particularly during Tawaf and between Safa and Marwa — carries immense reward. Many pilgrims bring written lists of du'as to recite throughout their journey.
Umrah Visa Requirements for UK Pilgrims
UK passport holders require a valid visa to enter Saudi Arabia for Umrah. Since 2019, Saudi Arabia opened tourism more broadly, but a dedicated Umrah visa is still required for pilgrimage — the tourist e-visa does not cover Umrah-specific rites. Here is everything you need to know:
| Requirement | Details for UK Pilgrims | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Passport Validity | Minimum 6 months from travel date | UK biometric passports accepted |
| Visa Type | Umrah visa (pilgrim visa) | Must be obtained via approved Umrah operator |
| Visa Duration | Up to 30 days per visit | Valid for entry via designated ports only |
| Vaccinations | Meningitis ACWY required | Polio & seasonal flu recommended |
| Mahram Requirement (Women) | Women under 45 require a mahram | Women 45+ may travel in organised group |
| Child Travel | Children on Umrah visa with parent | Birth certificate may be required |
| Hajj Restriction | No Umrah visa during Hajj season (Dhul Hijjah) | Pilgrims cannot enter Makkah on Umrah visa during Hajj period |
How to Apply for an Umrah Visa from the UK
- The Saudi Ministry of Hajj and Umrah requires all UK pilgrims to book through an approved Umrah tour operator (such as TripNext). You cannot apply for an Umrah visa independently.
- Provide a valid UK passport (6+ months validity), two passport photos, proof of vaccinations (Meningitis ACWY), and for women under 45, proof of mahram relationship.
- A Meningitis ACWY vaccination certificate is mandatory. Ensure this is obtained at least 10 days before travel. Your GP or a travel clinic can administer this.
- Umrah visas typically take 5–14 working days to process. TripNext will handle the application on your behalf once all documents are received.
- Once approved, your e-visa is linked to your passport. You will receive a visa confirmation letter. No physical sticker is required for most UK passports.
Ramadan restriction: Saudi Arabia significantly increases visa processing times during the weeks approaching Ramadan. If you plan to perform Umrah in Ramadan, begin your visa application at least 8–10 weeks before your intended travel date.
Ihram Rules — What to Do & What to Avoid
Ihram is the sacred state pilgrims must enter before performing Umrah. It signifies spiritual purity, equality before Allah, and dedication to worship. Once you cross the Miqat boundary, you are bound by the rules of ihram until you complete Umrah and perform halq or taqsir.
Ihram Garments — Men vs Women
| Aspect | Men | Women |
|---|---|---|
| Ihram Garment | Two unstitched white cloths: Izar (lower) + Rida (upper) | Normal modest Islamic dress (abaya, jilbab or salwar kameez) |
| Head Covering | Head must be uncovered — no hat, cap or turban | Hair must be covered with hijab; face must remain uncovered |
| Footwear | Open sandals that do not cover the top of the foot | Any closed or open footwear is permissible |
| Colour | Must be white and unstitched | Any solid, modest colour — preferably white or neutral |
| Gloves | Not permitted | Not recommended (face veil / niqab also not permitted while in ihram) |
Permitted & Prohibited Acts in Ihram
Permitted (Halal) in Ihram
- Bathing and washing with unscented soap
- Changing ihram garments if they become dirty
- Wearing a money belt or ring
- Using an umbrella for shade
- Wearing a watch or glasses
- Eating and drinking normally
- Using unscented wet wipes
- Seeking medical treatment
Prohibited (Haram) in Ihram
- Cutting or shaving hair or nails
- Using perfume or scented products
- Covering the head (men only)
- Wearing stitched/sewn clothing (men)
- Wearing face veil / niqab (women)
- Sexual relations or intimacy
- Hunting or harming animals
- Fighting, arguing or using foul language
- Cutting plants or trees in Haram boundary
- Marriage contract during ihram state
Practical tip for flights: Many pilgrims change into ihram at the airport or on the aircraft before landing in Saudi Arabia. Ask your airline in advance if there is a changing facility available. Alternatively, you may put on ihram before leaving the UK if your intention is firm — the Miqat for those travelling by air is the point the aircraft crosses over the designated boundary.

Best Months to Perform Umrah from the UK
Umrah can be performed in any month of the Islamic calendar except during the five days of Hajj (8th–12th Dhul Hijjah). However, the time of year you choose significantly affects temperature in Makkah, crowd levels, flight and hotel prices, and the spiritual atmosphere.
Package Price Comparison by Season
*Indicative 7-night Umrah package prices per person from the UK including flights and 3–4 star hotel accommodation. Actual prices vary by hotel star rating, distance from Haram, and departure airport.
Ramadan Umrah: Performing Umrah in the blessed month of Ramadan carries immense reward — the Prophet ﷺ said that performing Umrah in Ramadan is equivalent in reward to performing Hajj with him. However, be prepared for the most crowded and expensive conditions of the year. Book at least 4–5 months in advance for Ramadan Umrah packages.
Flights from UK to Jeddah & Madinah for Umrah
UK pilgrims typically fly into Jeddah King Abdulaziz International Airport (JED), approximately 80km from Makkah, or directly to Prince Mohammed bin Abdulaziz Airport, Madinah (MED). The choice depends on your itinerary — whether you begin your pilgrimage in Makkah or visit Madinah first.

Hotels Near Masjid al-Haram — Distance & Star Rating Guide
Your hotel's proximity to Masjid al-Haram is one of the most important decisions in planning your Umrah. The closer the hotel, the more time you can spend in worship — and the higher the price. Hotels are typically categorised by distance from the Haram's King Abdul Aziz Gate.

For families and elderly pilgrims: Prioritise hotels within 200–300m of the Haram. The ability to walk to the Masjid frequently for all five daily prayers — without needing a wheelchair transport or long walks — makes an enormous difference to the quality and ease of your Umrah experience. The additional cost is well worth it for those with mobility considerations.
Umrah for Elderly & Disabled Pilgrims — Essential Tips
Performing Umrah is a deeply meaningful spiritual journey for pilgrims of all ages and physical abilities. Saudi authorities and hotel operators have significantly improved accessibility in recent years. With the right preparation, elderly and disabled pilgrims can perform Umrah comfortably and with dignity.
Wheelchair Access
Wheelchairs are available for hire at the Haram. Both Tawaf and Sa'i can be performed by wheelchair. A designated area for wheelchair users exists in the Tawaf zone on the ground floor.
Stay Close to the Haram
For elderly pilgrims, booking a hotel within 200m of Masjid al-Haram dramatically reduces walking. Many hotels also offer internal corridors directly connecting to the Haram expansion.
Medical Clearance
Consult your GP before travelling. Ensure you have adequate prescription medication for the full trip (plus spare supply). Carry a medical summary card in Arabic and English.
Travel in Off-Peak Months
October to February offers cooler temperatures and relatively smaller crowds — far easier on the body. Avoid Ramadan and Hajj season if health or mobility is a concern.
Private Guided Group
TripNext can arrange small private Umrah groups with a dedicated guide and support throughout. This is particularly valuable for elderly pilgrims who may need assistance with the steps of Umrah.
Hydration is Critical
Even in cooler months, Makkah is dry and warm. Elderly pilgrims should carry Zamzam water constantly, drink regularly, and avoid prolonged exposure to midday sun during outdoor movement.
Rulings for Elderly Who Cannot Complete Umrah Physically
Islamic scholars have issued guidance to accommodate pilgrims with limited physical ability. If a pilgrim is unable to walk between Safa and Marwa or perform Tawaf on foot, they may use a wheelchair or mobility aid — the Umrah is fully valid. If a pilgrim is completely unable to perform Umrah themselves due to serious illness or disability, a family member may perform Umrah on their behalf (known as Umrah by proxy, or Umrah al-Badal), subject to scholarly guidance.
TripNext's elderly Umrah service: We offer bespoke Umrah packages designed for elderly and mobility-assisted pilgrims. This includes close-to-Haram hotel booking, wheelchair assistance arrangements, private group guidance, airport meet-and-assist, and 24/7 support throughout your journey in Makkah and Madinah.
