UK & EU suspend PIA flights
Following a fatal Airbus A320 crash in Karachi and a subsequent
investigation revealing irregularities in Pakistani pilot licensing, both the UK Civil
Aviation Authority and the EU Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) suspended PIA from operating to
Britain and Europe.

Pakistan overhauls aviation safety standards
Pakistan’s Civil Aviation Authority re-verified every pilot
licence, tightened aircraft maintenance oversight and rebuilt its regulatory framework to

The EU Aviation Safety Agency formally removed PIA from its restricted
list, and PIA resumed European flights to Paris Charles de Gaulle in January 2025 and later

UK Civil Aviation Authority lifts the ban
After a full independent safety audit by the UK Air Safety Committee,
Britain formally lifted its five-year restriction, allowing PIA to apply for operating
permits to resume flights to London, Manchester and Birmingham.

PIA resumes UK flights — Islamabad to Manchester

Pakistan’s national airline changed hands in the country’s biggest privatisation in two decades — here’s what happened and what it means for UK to Pakistan flights
On 23 December 2025, the Government of Pakistan concluded a landmark privatisation of PIA through a televised open auction in Islamabad. A consortium led by Arif Habib Corporation Limited — alongside Fatima Fertiliser Company, City Schools and Lake City Holdings — placed the winning bid of Rs135 billion (approximately $482 million) for a 75% controlling stake in Pakistan International Airlines, beating a rival consortium led by Lucky Cement.
The deal marked Pakistan’s first major state-owned enterprise privatisation in almost twenty years. The majority of the sale proceeds were reinvested directly into PIA to fund fleet renewal, route expansion and improved passenger services, while the Government of Pakistan retained a 25% stake. By mid-2026, private management under the new ownership — since restructured as PIA Equity Ltd — took full operational control, with the airline targeting growth from around 4 million to 7 million annual passengers and a modernised fleet of 40 aircraft within four years.
